Thrombosis and HemostasisProphylactic statin use reduces risk of PE or DVT![]() Researchers at the University of Connecticut found that patients with all types of venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), benefit from the use of statins. The team of researchers looked at 10 studies of more than 900,000 patients to evaluate the effect of statins in the prevention of VTE. The lead author of the study, Vanjul Agarwal, MBBS, believes the reduction in inflammation caused by statins is responsible for the decreased risk of VTE. “Statins have been found to have antiinflammatory properties. Since thrombus formation involves inflammation, statins may reduce venous thrombus formation and thus, lower the odds of developing PE/DVT,” said Dr Agarwal. “Patients at high risk for developing PE or DVT may be prescribed statins prophylactically. “ Dr Agarwal believes regular use of statins could reduce the incidence of PE and DVT. She also said future randomized, controlled trials may help determine a course of statin therapy for patients most at risk for developing PE or DVT. The results of the study were presented at the American Thoracic Society 2010 International Conference held in New Orleans on May 14-19. |
